How It Works
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) helps low-income households buy food. Seniors (60+) get special deductions for medical expenses and have no gross income test — only a net income test applies.
The Formula
Net Income = Gross − Standard Deduction − Medical Deduction (over $35) − Excess Shelter
Benefit = Max Benefit − 30% × Adjusted Net Income
Benefit = Max Benefit − 30% × Adjusted Net Income
Variables
- Max Benefit — Maximum monthly allotment based on household size (2024: $291 for 1 person)
- Medical Ded. — Out-of-pocket medical expenses over $35/month (seniors/disabled only)
- 30% — Expected contribution of net income toward food
Example
Single senior, $1,400 income, $200 medical, $1,200 shelter: Net = $1,400 − $198 − $165 = $1,037. Shelter excess = $1,200 − $519 = $681. Adjusted = $356. Benefit = $291 − $107 = $184/month.
Tips
- Seniors (60+) are exempt from the gross income test — only net income must be below 100% FPL.
- Medical expenses over $35/month are deductible (prescriptions, Medicare premiums, transportation to appointments).
- The minimum benefit for 1-2 person elderly/disabled households is $23/month even if the formula gives less.
- Apply at your local Department of Social Services or online at your state SNAP portal.
- SNAP benefits can be used at most grocery stores and many farmers markets.
